To calculate the number of fans, we use a simple but precise standard: The poultry house must be able to completely exchange all the air inside the house within 1 minute (or 45 to 60 seconds) during hot weather. This is known as Tunnel Ventilation.

Let’s look at a concrete example using a standard modern broiler house.

Step 1: Calculate the Volume of the Poultry House

Assume you have a standard chicken coop with the following dimensions:

  • Length: 120 meters

  • Width: 15 meters

  • Average Height: 3 meters

Step 2: Calculate the Total Required Ventilation Capacity per Hour

Since we want to refresh the entire volume of air every 1 minute, that means we need to refresh it 60 times in one hour.

Note: For extremely hot tropical regions (e.g., Southeast Asia, Africa), engineers often recommend a faster air exchange rate—around 45 seconds per air change—which would increase the required total airflow by multiplying by 80 instead of 60.

Next, you need to check the specifications of the fans you are buying.

3 Critical Factors Producers Often Forget

While the math above gives you the baseline, real-world farm conditions require you to adjust your numbers based on these three factors:

1. Static Pressure Drop

Fans do not operate in a vacuum. When air pulls through cooling pads or light traps, it creates resistance (static pressure). High static pressure reduces a fan's actual air-moving capacity. Always use the fan's performance data under pressure (e.g., at 25 Pa or 0.10 inches of water column), not the "free air" maximum rating.

2. Bird Density and Maximum Biomass

The formula above is based on house volume, which is excellent for hot-weather velocity. However, you must also cross-check the maximum biological weight of the birds at market age. Mature broilers generate massive amounts of metabolic heat. In heavy-stocking density setups, you may need to add 1 or 2 extra backup fans to handle peak summer loads.

3. Wind Speed (Wind Chill Effect)

In tunnel ventilation, the goal is not just to replace air, but to create a wind chill effect (air velocity of 2.5 to 3.0 meters per second across the birds). This cools the chickens down by making it feel up to 5°C cooler than the actual thermometer reading.
